Use of "that" and interrogative pronoun

#1 I don't know (that) how he is.

#2 I can say (that) where he lives is known to me.

#3 I know (that) what you say is right.

Are these sentences correct and use of "that" is optional there?

In narration we are not supposed to use "that" with interrogative pronoun as they also work as conjunction.

But I am confused about other sentences.

Thank you

[1] *I don't know (that) how he is . [2] I can say (that) where he lives is known to me . [3] I know (that) what you say is right .

  • [1] *I don't know (that) how he is .
  • [2] I can say (that) where he lives is known to me .
  • [3] I know (that) what you say is right .
  • [1] is ungrammatical since you cannot use "that" to introduce a subordinate interrogative clause like how he is.
  • [2] and [3] are fine, though "that" is more likely to be omitted in informal style.
