Thank you. Sounds better with remain. So there is no wayof using sustain to convey the intended information? What does sustain mean in that sentence?

Also, just out of curiosity, if there is a way of using sustain in my sentence, please show me?

That is not an appropriate use of the verb "sustain."

Bob survived a plane crash in the wilderness. He had enough food and water to sustain him for a week or two, but no longer.

Got it. I also thought that the word sustain could not be used in the sentence I provided. or is there any way of using the word sustain by rephrasing the sentence I wrote with the information that I am trying to convey?

You can use many different verbs: persist / stay / remain / remain detectable / linger but sustain is not one of them.
