Use of ruin

Hi

Would you say that the use of ruin is natural here? Any other suggestion please?

Reading in this dark will ruin your eyes.

His eyes were ruined because he used to read in a very dim light.

Unless he's dead now, I'd consider saying His eyes are ruined because he used to read in a very dim light.
