Use of "rest of"

How do i use "rest of ?" . This is confusing to me.

I suppose you are asking about agreement with a following verb, right? Make the agreement with the noun after "the rest of":

The rest of the cake was put in the refrigerator. (singular)
The rest of the children were playing outside. (plural)
