Use of "the"

Can we use "the" when we want to generalize about something ?
Ex : Today, the mobile telephone has become omnipresent.
Thanks in advance

Hello Vance

Nice to talk to you. I'm a learner from Japan.

Yes you can use 'the' for nouns in generic sense. If you want to learn more about the use of 'the', please visit [url="http://www.fsz.uni-hannover.de/Sprachbereiche/Englisch/dozenten/mcelholm/download/EN_ART.pd

Thanks for your answer. That's how I felt about it.
I agree for the use of "omnipresent", the way you say it is much more elegant.

all the best
