Use of quotation marks

Using quotation marks to off-set a workd in a sentence, is it personal preference or is there a rule?

Example: These friendships define patterns that form their social network and further categorize them and the “type” of person they are during this time.

Thanks!

It is not a personal choice, and it seems wrong in your example. Use single or double inverted commas to mark off a word which (1) is foreign, (2) is being used in a special sense (including word qua word), or (3) is a new or newly defined word.
