Use of "pop the question"

Hi,

I know from the dictionary that "to pop the question" means to "propose (marriage) to someone".

I wonder if I can use the phase "to pop a question" to mean "to ask a question unexpectedly, as though that question came out of left field"?

For instance, does the sentence below sound normal to a native speaker's ear ?

Jack popped a question at us about what we were gonna do with the haul after the heist, and we had to let him in on that too

Thanks a bunch !

MrPernickety Jack popped a question at us about what we were gonna do with the haul after the heist, and we had to let him in on that too I can't say you'll never hear something like that but I wouldn't make a habit of using it. I can't really put my finger on what but something about it kind of grates on the ear.
