Use of past tense of pat

She pat his head.

Is this past tense correct?

Top answer

Hi, No, it's 'patted'. But possibly American English may use 'pat', just as I believe it seems to use 'fit' and 'pet' as past tense. Perhaps an American will comment.

I always thought that was correct too, but going through websites they all seem to say patted. dictionary.com says it as well. they're usually right. I was having the same problem just now trying to think of it!

Hi,

I'd say . . . and it fitted, but both forms are acceptable.

My elders used to laugh and 'correct' me on this, as they did when I said costed- another of my favorites as a child.

No, fitted is something else entirely. If you go to a tailor, you might order a fitted shirt. Fit is present and past tense.

Hi,

Fit is present and past tense.

Are you speaking only of American English?
