use of past perfect for single event

"Why are you not selling your old bungalow?
"Because I had promised my father that I will never sell it"
Here there is no other past event. Can we use past perfect in single action/event as above?

Top answer

Anonymous Here there is no other past event. To my ear, the implied past event is the death of his father. Besides, I would say: I had promised my father that I would never sell it.

"Yes, I know. Mr, John had informed me in the morning about this."
Is the use of past perfect correct here?

"Yes, I know. Mr. John had informed me about it this morning. in the morning about this."
I can't think of a reason for saying this. It's not very good. Leave out 'had'.
