Use of "offbeat"

Hi

Is the word offbeat (=unconventional) slang or very informal? Is this sentence natural in everyday English?

I find his humor very offbeat.

Thanks,

Tom

This is heard quite often in the US. It's more colloquial speech than slang. The structure of the given sentence is a little formal for everyday speech - and "offbeat" already carries with it the sense of "very." You'd more likely hear something like:

He's got an offbeat sense of humor.

His sense of humor is offbeat.
