Use of off

Is the use of "off" by cricket commentators in sentences like "They must score 18 runs off the last 3 balls" or "No one can score 100 runs off his bowling" just idiomatic or can we use "off" in the same sense in other contexts too ?

By "in the same sense" do you mean in the sense of "from"? Such use of "off" is quite common. It can feel casual, shading into substandard in some instances.

"It fell off the table."

"I borrowed them off a friend."

"I learned it off my teacher."
