use of numerals in distances

Does anyone have a definite answer to this:

is it 0.5 mile, 0.5 of a mile, or 0.5 miles? I think it's the former, but I've had several people edit it to the latter, but one could say "five-tenths of a mile" when reading it. I suppose technically it would be read "zero point five mile".
