Use of M.D. for medical doctor in letters

Is it appropriate in letters to medical doctors that are not business related to place M.D. after their name when the title of Dr. has been used?

The title Dr. is given to people other than medical doctors. Someone with a PhD is also called Dr., for example. Use both "M.D" and "Dr." if it might be unclear. Only use "M.D." when you are referring to this person, don't use it when you are addressing them.
