Use of "massive" & "catastrophic"

I need your advice on the use of the following adjectives.

A teacher claims that ,

massive should be used with destruction.....thus ...massive destruction

and

catastrophic should be used with losses...thus .....catastrophic losses

In my opinion, massive destruction is a common use....but i do not see why it must be matched in this

way rigidly....please indicate if that mix and match between one and another..

thanks....

massive is very large. The universe is massive. Catastrophic is something that is a disaster, (large and negative).

  • massive is very large.
  • The universe is massive.
  • Catastrophic is something that is a disaster, (large and negative).
  • You can say something like 'The vast amount of destruction caused was catastrophic' or 'The company losses were massive (although i would say huge)'.
  • I wouldn't put catastrophic 'destruction together' or massive losses' without other words in between them.
