Use of malfunction

Hi

Would you say that malfunction would sound too formal here? What would be the better (more natural) words?

A - You said you couldn't sleep well last night?
B - Yes, the AC/heater malfunctioned in the middle of the night. It was too hot/cold.

Thanks,

Tom

"Malfunction" to me suggests that it was running, but it was putting out air at the wrong temperature. It was cooler or warmer than desired. If it stopped working, just say "it broke" in the middle of the night.
