Use of "left for dead"

Hi,

I lighted on this sentence:

1. She was beaten up and left for dead

I hazard a guess that "to be left for dead" means "to be left to die", but can't give much credence to my guess ))), so could you tell me if my guess is right or not? Also, could you tell me if this expression is in wide use ?

Thanks !
