Use of "in" versus "inside"

My kids always use the word "inside" when they could/should be using the word "in". Examples are, "Can you grab my shoes inside the closet?", "I am going to watch the football game inside the front room.", "I want to ride inside the Lexus."

My wife says she thinks they are using it appropriately but I think they are over using it. My explanation is to use the word inside when there is a question of whether or not it is inside or outside. Can anyone else help me explain this? Or am I am totally off base here?

Thanks!

" Curious examples. "in" is certainly more standard in these cases. Your own explanation is quite adequate.
