Use of 'in the sticks'

Is the use of the expression 'in the sticks' natural here?

In the sticks = in a remote area

She's bought a new house somewhere in the sticks.

In American English, is is a bit condescending. The further away from the city you live, the cheaper the houses are. So it is snotty to say "She lives out in the sticks."
