Use of 'in the negative'

Hi

Is the use of 'in the negative' natural English here? Any other suggestions please?

My boss was a very strange person and would first say no to any suggestion. So we worked out a system. If we wanted something approved, we'd put it in the negative to him and it would surely be approved.
