Use of impale

Hi

Is the use of impale fully natural here? Could you please offer me a simpler word or phrase verb? What about cut through?

He fell off the tree and something sharp impaled his thigh.

He fell off the tree and something sharp cut through his thigh.

Thanks,

Tom

I suggest this. He fell out of the tree and something sharp went through his thigh. The tree means you are talking about a tree that the listener already knows about.
