Use of hush up

Hi

Could you please tell me the most natural expression for this situation? The underlined words are my attempts.

The baby did not hush up for two hours.

The mother was trying to quieten/hush her baby.

Thanks,

Tom

PS: It was interesting to learn that you can't write the word crying in brackets; it turns into an emoticon by default. I wanted to write Emotion: crying baby.
