Use of 'how long'

Hello,

Does anyone tell me whether the way to use of 'how long' is correct or not in the following sentence.

'Your father wants to know how long you are going to be late home, so make sure to call him.'

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Hiroshi

No, Hiroshi, but these are possible:

'Your father wants to know how late you are going to be home, so make sure to call him.'

'Your father wants to know how long before you are going to be home, so make sure to call him.'

'Arriving home' is a point event, while 'how long' asks for a length of time.

Thank you for your advice, Mister Micawber.

Your advice always help me a lot.

I felt something was wrong with the use of 'how long' in the question, I feel clear now.

Sincerely,

Hiroshi
