Use of 'hi'

Can a student say 'hi' to a teacher?

Can he say 'hello' to a teacher?

Or is it better for him to say 'good morning / afternoon / evening'?

When I was in 3rd grade, every morning the class all sat down and greeted the teacher in unison: "Good morning, Mrs. Harrison!" She replied, "Good morning, class." That was the ritual every day. I still think it is a nice way to start the day.

It is never wrong to greet someone with a cheerful, "Good morning."
