Use of “Has been” and “ was”

Dear all,
He has been with me for ten years. This means I think still he is with me or just finished.
He was with me for ten years. This means I think he is not with me. When I hear people speaking this type of sentences I am confused the meaning of these sentences. Please clear my doubts and give me one example too.
