Just curious, why is it possible to say 'special thanks' and 'a special thanks' but not 'big thanks'? Why is the article needed with 'big' and not 'special'?

We're back to mention and use. This means you have to pay attention to quotation marks.

To be exactly correct (and few people bother in these cases), they should be punctuated like this:

1. Special thanks ... (Using the word "thanks")
2. A special "thanks" ... (Mentioning t

CalifJimThe one that won't work is 3. When you use 'thanks', you need an adjective that goes with its meaning. Thanks (feelings of appreciation) can be special, but such feelings don't come in different sizes (big and small), so 3 doesn't work.
