use of former and latter in this sentence.

Hi guys, a quick question about the use of "the former .. the latter".

I understand that this is often used in formal speech... but I would like to know if this sentence is ok

" the use of different materials achieves 2 purposes: the former to assess the method, the latter to provide a comparison"

I know this is a silly sentence...but just wanted to know about the correctness of the "former ...latter" part Emotion: smile

Based on my own understanding, the word "former" is another term for aforementioned so if you didn't mention anything previously, then there is no former. The same goes with the "latter" which means last-mentioned.

Better usage of these words are like the following examples:

I've been to Pa

thanks a lot for the tips...I agree that I should mention specifically the 2 words I'm referring to.... before using former/latter

you can use 'one' and 'the other' in that sentence instead. unless you expect your reader what you are referring to as the former and the latter.

wrong!
If you want to use the former, the latter you need to first fully name and develop a phenomenon in a sentence preceeding the forme, the latterr-sentences. It is in descriptive grammar terms an anaphora.

So is Tom the former and **** the latter or is it the other way around? That is what I am never sure of...
