Use of "Former" and "Latter"

I was wondering if someone would tell me if "former" and "latter" are used correctly in the following sentence:
"The Chevy and the Buick differ from the Subaru and the BMW in that the latter have four wheel drive. However, the former still handle well."
Thanks very much.

  • It's not that they are wrong, but they sure are a bit clumsy.
  • For one thing, adding a "two" after the "latter" would help.
