Use of "first" and "going to"

Hi, I've found a few essays where the author wrote "I am first going to analyse" etc. "then I will discuss" etc., but it doesn't sound right to me. Shouldn't it be either "First I'm going to analyse" or "I am going to first analyse", and shouldn't he stick with "going to" instead of switching to "will"? Or are these just academic structures? Help, it's driving me nuts!
