Hi
Can I use "eye-opener" to refer to a situation in which someone realize something that they had not realized before?
For example,
My boyfriend cheated on me, and I didn't know about it at all. One of my friends opened my eyes to the cheating stuff, making me notice the whole thing.
Is it appropriate to say "It was a real eye-opener" in a situation like this?
Thanks in advance
Mina Uzun Is it appropriate to say "It was a real eye-opener" in a situation like this? It's not impossible, but the term "eye-opener" mostly tends to refer to a revelation of a more general or widely applicable nature. For example, let's say (obviously it is unlikely in reality) that you had no idea that any boys ever cheated on their girlfriends, and someone mentioned a case of this to you, then you could say "it was a real eye-opener".

GPY nailed it, as always, but it could be added that you might say "It really opened my eyes", which has the plain meaning that the fixed expression lacks.
