Use of 'equal'

Hello there,

Just a little question of word-usage.

Which one is right?

"Are they equal?"

"Do they equal?"

Or even neither of them?

B: Are they equal?
A: Of course!

However, if I add context:

A: I've just written some fantastic short stories.
B: Do they equal Katherine Mansfield's?
A: Probably
