Use of 'convalesce'

Hi

Could you please tell me how the use of convalesce would sound to your native ears in everyday English?

Convalesce = recuperate

She is convalescing at home after the surgery.

Or

She is recuperating at home after the surgery.

Thanks,

Tom

convalesce - Sounds like it will be a rather slow process. The surgery was probably not minor. recuperate - OK but I don't hear that a lot.
