Use of conjunction words at the beginning of sentences in Scientific Papers

I have notice that I have used this a lot. I'm afraid that I'm "thinking" in

Portuguese (my native language). Specifically for Scientific Papers,

where we need to be "economic" in the use of words, may I avoid the use

of "Hence" in this example?

"Identifying drug targets is crucial to drug discovery. Hence, it is important to improve the..."

Can I write simply:

"Identifying drug targets is crucial to drug discovery. It is important to improve the..."
