Use of commas...2 questions

I read that commas should be used before parenthetical elements. I do not understand if a sentence contains the word “when” followed by “and” which part of the sentence is a parenthetical element?

1)

However, continuing my sports activities, when my injuries had healed and my health was strong enough to do so, has been the most important goal of my life.

2)

However, continuing my sports activities when my injuries had healed, and my health was strong enough to do so, has been the most important goal of my life.

Hi Anon, I used to put in more commas and agonize over whether or not they were correct. After years of writing i have come to the conclusion that rules often get in the way of good sense. One way i found to test a sentence for comma use is to say it aloud.

  • If your voice naturally pauses at the point where you were considering a comma then it is probably right to use one.
  • If the sentence flows along fine with no pause then don't clutter it up with commas.
