Use of commas

Hi everyone,

Would just like to ask whether it is all right to use a comma in the following situations:

"Let's go, then."

"He was late, however."

On a side note, I've read on a grammar website that the following sentence is incorrect, but I cannot quite agree:

"Nancy waved at Julie, laughing joyously."

The reason given was that the clause "laughing joyously" could attach to either Nancy or Julie. However, in my opinion, since Nancy is the subject in this sentence, shouldn't the clause "laughing joyously" attach to her? Am I right to say so?

Thanks so much!

Hi Clive,

Thank you for your prompt (and humorous) response. I'd just like to ask more about my first question though. I'm happy to find out that the use of commas are all right since I'd would have used them as such. However, I do think that it is all right not to use them as well, is it not? Is it a purely personal choice? Or is there some way to go about deciding whether or no
