Use of comma

I have been given a section, and I have been asked to identify the grammatical errors.

He called it “but a mortal veil,” one that he had vowed to wear in this present life, but could be removed forever in heavenly eternity.

Is the comma before but to be omitted?

Kindly explain.

jhilly89 Is the comma before but to be omitted? You could, but there seems to be a tacit "which" after "but" that favors its retention.
