Use of comma

Isn't the use of comma after sell inappropriate? (By inappropriate I mean totally wrong according to formal grammar).

In 1929 relatively small declines in the market ruined many speculators who had bought on margin; they had to sell, and their selling pushed other investors to the brink.

Why? I think we need a comma to seperate nouns, ideas or give a pause in speech or add a relative clause. But here none of these apply.

There are two independent clauses there. Two nouns, two verbs.

They had to sell.

Their selling pushed other investors to the brink.

When you join two independent clauses with an and, you usually put a comma after the first one.
