Use of "Can"

For this sentence, when is it appropriate to use "can" or "will"?

I can pick up dinner.

I can pick up dinner - without other context most of the time it means: I have the ability to, but it doesn't mean that i am going to do it. 2 general situations: 1) John: I have to work and I have no time to pick up dinner. Jane: I get off at 5, I can pick up dinner for the both of us.
