Use of 'by which' and 'in which'

Which is the most grammatically correct sentence:

1. "There are three main ways by which energy consumption data can be gathered from meters" OR

2. "There are three main ways in which energy consumption data can be gathered from meters"

?

Thanks

Hi, I wouldn't say either is incorrect grammar, but 'ways in which' is much more common. Clive
