Use of 'BUT' and 'SO'

Hi everyone,

1) In a nursery song 'Row a boat', what is the meaning of 'Life is but a dream'? Why we use 'BUT' in this sentence? Does this 'BUT' carry any meaning? Is there any difference in meaning of 'Life is a dream'?

Lyrics:

Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
Life is but a dream

2) In a nursery song '12345, once i caught a fish alive'? Why we use 'SO' in the sentence "Because it bite my finger so'? Does this 'SO' carry any meaning? if yes, when to add a 'SO' just before the end of a sentence?

Lyrics:

One, two, three, four, five
Once I caught a fish alive,
Six, seven, eight, nine, ten,
Then I let it go again.

Why did you let it go?
Because it bit my finger so.
Which finger did it bite?
This little finger on my right.

Thank you. Emotion: smile
