Use of Break with "precedent"

Hi

Is the use of break with precedent and status quo natural here?

  1. He had dinner at his own restaurant and broke the precedent.
  2. We need to break the status quo.

Thanks,

Tom

It is a very odd mixture of expressions. Not that it's wrong, or doesn't make sense.

He had dinner at his own restaurant, breaking his long-held habit of not eating his own creations.
