Use of break and shake

Hi

Are these sentences natural--I mean, the use of break and shake?

  1. The doctors tried their level best but they could not break her fever.
  2. The doctors tried their level best but they could not shake her fever.
  3. She lay in bed for days but could not break her fever.
  4. She lay in bed for days but could not shake her fever.

Thanks,

Tom

Only 1 and 4 make sense to me.

The person (the patient) with the fever (or illness) must shake it.
The doctor's treatment (of the patient) is designed to break the fever.

The fever itself eventually breaks (not shakes).
