Use of blow up in a sentence

1. The bomb blew up at a public toilet last month.
2. The bomb was blown up at a public toilet last month.
I'd like to know whether the two sentences above are grammatically correct.

2. The bomb was blown up at a public toilet last month. OK, but sounds like eg the police destroyed the bomb.
