Use of 'bear down'

Hi

I could not find the meaning of bearing down in this context. Is it common in everyday English?

(Narration in a documentary)

A watering hole in Bostwana...a drought is bearing down. (=taking place?)

Thanks,

Tom

Not exactly 'taking place'. That's more general than 'bearing down'.

Usually it is a storm. I have never heard it used for a drought, which is much much slower.

The hurricane is bearing down on the coastal town of Corpus Christi.
