Use of articles before kettle and fire.

Hello,

I was doing an exercise relating to Articles/Determiners and I encountered a problem which I cannot explain thus need some help.

The question is spot the error in the given sentence :-

"The old woman placed kettle on fire and come back to the bedroom."

My answer is that I should place definite article "The" before kettle but the answer key in the book says that article "The" should be placed before fire and no mention of kettle. Now I think kettle is definite and specific and has a reference thus article "The" should be placed before kettle and I am not sure about "fire".

I will be grateful if anyone can explain to me why I should place article the before fire and what should I do with kettle.

Thank you!!
