Use of Articles

All your points make sense to me but I still have that nagging thought that some of the article rules mentioned in those respectable work (in the sense that a considerable amount of time and effort has been put into them to make the grammar rules more accessible to us). Grammar rules aside, if the sentence had appeared in this way, what would have been your reaction intuitively:

“design means features of a shape or an ornament applied to any article or non-physical product that give that article or non-physical product its appearance.”
