Use of articles

Could anyone please explain the use of the indefinite article in the phrase "I'm reading a book called The Joy Luck Club"? It specifies what particular book we're talking about, doesn't it?

The book is not specified until after the speaker mentions a book.

How about the example: "I spoke to the man I'd met the day before"

I don't specify the man until I mention meeting him the day before.

The writer has thought ahead to the specification. Some writers do that.
