Use of articles

I am not a native born English speaker. But over the years, I believe I have acquired a reasonable ability to write in English. But the use of articles - a or the or just no article - bedevil me to no end. I have not yet found a reliable set of rules to determine as when to use a or the or just not use an article at all. Most of time it appears I am taking a shot in the dark when it comes to use or not use an article. Can you help?

Hi,

I agree. In my classroom experience, the most common article error by learners of English is to omit an article where it is needed.
