Use of articles

Hi.

I need help in using the articles. Here are two sentenses:

1) A department store is a shop where all kind of things are sold.

2) The lion is a large pourful animal.

I would put 'a" before 'lion'. I don't understand why we use 'a' before 'department store', but 'the' before 'lion'. Could you please explain it. Or maybe just give me another examples so I could feel the difference.

Thanks for your help.

When you are making definitions, you can put either 'a' or 'the' in either sentence. 'The' is speaking of the species or type; 'a' is speaking of any typical example of the species or type.
