Use of article with gulfs

Hi,

Can anyone please explain why there is a definite article (the) in examples: THE Persian Gulf, THE Arabian Gulf?

Is it because of the use of adjectives persian, arabian?
I need an answer ASAP.
Thank you.

The adjectives Persian and Arabian define which gulf it is. The gulf being defined, we need the definite article.
