use of article with directions

Do I have to use the article with directions like "north, east,..." or can it be omitted? E.g. "The time difference from east to west is three hours." Or: "The time difference from the east to the west is three hours."

The sentence "The time difference from the east to the west is three hours." sounds better.

I would say no, you don't have to use the article in that sentence. Either with or without is fine.
